Gruesome
Night
17th April was a busy day from the dawn engaging
in distributing of folders and cards to delegates of National Conference on
Natural Science and Technology (NCNST) until noon. The next program was poster
presentation and enjoyed going through different posters with creative projects
and wonderful designs. The first day ended with cultural programs and dinner
with delegates and guest speakers. After they left the hall, we the volunteers,
one after another, sometimes in group rock the stage for an hour. At around 10pm went to room utterly exhausted.
I could only dream that after taking shower unwind myself on my soft cotton pink
glaring color bed sheet with beautiful branches printed. However, as soon as I open
the door the room was occupied with heat and it seems heat and fan was
competing in my room for the space. And I perceive heat was leading because it
also heated me up as I went inside. Immediately I undress my NCNST’s T-shirt
and wore my DIY shirt and half pant. The shower was in lukewarm water and I didn’t
feel like freshen up myself. Anyhow I did and launder my few clothes. I went to
bed at around 11:30 due to exhaustion I asleep for an hour and I wish that the
sleep continues until next morning but the very harsh heat of Chittagong didn’t
let my sleep continue. It tortured me that night. The burning sensation from
back and sweats drench my pillow. I moved back and fro and pulled my roommates
box fan very near like few centimeters away from my face and another fan
spinning at its highest speed. I have same chore for the next day conference
and have to arrive at 8am. The time was already 2am when I tried to continue my
nap. Simultaneously, the mosquitoes started coming nearby my ears with
irritating sound and gave me number of bites over my legs and arms. I woke up
right away and massage with mosquitoes repellent cream. By then my sleeps were
nowhere and I ponder over several topics. Is this heat really due to global
warming? If we can’t survive even under fan what might happen to people on the
street? What happen to infants, children and animals? Wished air conditioners
in the room, then I miss the cool breeze in Bhutan. I miss the way I sleep
under layers of blanket. Suddenly, again I am back to my sense and reminded
myself of the duty on next day. By then the time was already 4am. Oh! I got
only few hours, but it was spent trying to cool down the room. I open widely the
windows and door, turn of the common space lights and went to sleep again.
After few hours the alarm started ringing and had to prepare for the conference
again.
